SocietyOne, Australia’s leading marketplace lender, appoints new board director

SocietyOne, Australia’s leading marketplace lender, today announced the appointment of Brett Clegg to its board as a non-executive director.

Mr Clegg is Managing Director of News Corp Australia’s Community Publishing division. Among his responsibilities are its community titles in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, SMB digital marketing services provider newsXtend, and the company’s investments in a range of disruptive technology companies including hipages and Sports Technology Group.

Prior to spells with News Corp’s The Australian newspaper where he was deputy chief executive and later Fairfax Media’s CEO and Publisher of the Financial Review Group, Mr Clegg was a journalist, columnist and senior editor on the Australian Financial Review. He began his career at Ernst & Young before joining Macquarie Group. Mr Clegg is a board member of the Sydney Dance Company, hipages Group, Sports Technology Group and the Committee for Sydney.

His appointment to the board of SocietyOne is effective immediately. Mr Clegg joins Anthony Kerwick, (chairman), Dominic Stevens, the former chief executive of Challenger Financial Group, and Simon Cant, joint managing director of Westpac Group’s Reinventure Fund, as non-executive directors of the company. The other members are executive directors, Jason Yetton, SocietyOne’s Chief Executive Officer, Greg Symons and Matt Symons.

“Brett will be a welcome addition to the board, having already worked closely with the SocietyOne team to help establish the brand through the close working relationship with News Corp Australia,” said Anthony Kerwick. “I look forward to an even greater contribution from him as a director.”

Mr Clegg said: “I am a passionate believer in what SocietyOne is able to offer customers as an alternative to the traditional players in the financial services industry. I have also watched with close interest the way in which it is disrupting the status quo with its innovate digital technology.

“News Corp has a great depth of knowledge and experience in online marketplace models and we are very excited about the potential we see in one of Australia’s leading new generation digital lenders.”
